Steward Simutenda dies just six days after winning the Mbala mayoral election, turning a moment of political celebration into heartbreak.

Simutenda died in the early hours of Wednesday, 19 August 2026, before he could formally begin serving the people who elected him.

His brother, Gabriel Simutenda, confirmed that the mayor-elect died around midnight on 18 August following an illness.

Only days earlier, supporters had celebrated after Simutenda won the Mbala mayoral seat on a National Reconciliation Party for Unity and Prosperity ticket.

Now, the same community is preparing to say goodbye.

Simutenda won while battling illness

Simutenda had reportedly been admitted to hospital about a week before the 13 August general election.

Despite his illness, his name remained on the ballot. The people of Mbala subsequently elected him as their next mayor.

His victory demonstrated the support he had built in the district after years of involvement in local politics.

However, he never received the opportunity to walk into the mayoral office and begin fulfilling the promises he made to residents.

That painful reality has made his death even more difficult for supporters to accept.

One week, families were discussing his election victory and what it could mean for Mbala. Days later, they were sharing condolence messages with the people closest to him.

A familiar political figure in Mbala

Before joining the NRPUP, Simutenda served as the Patriotic Front district chairperson for Mbala.

He later became the NRPUP district chairperson and remained an active opposition voice in the area.

His political journey placed him close to the everyday concerns of residents. Local party structures often require leaders to spend time in communities, listen to grievances and organise support at grassroots level.

Therefore, his election as mayor represented the culmination of years spent building political relationships in Mbala.

His death has left both his party and the wider district without the leader voters had just chosen.

Residents mourn a mandate that never began

Election victories usually bring excitement, speeches and plans for the future.

For Simutenda’s family, however, the victory arrived alongside an intensely difficult personal period because of his declining health.

His supporters were given only a few days to celebrate before the news of his death changed everything.

The tragedy also carries a particular emotional weight because voters had placed their trust in him while he was hospitalised.

They believed he could lead Mbala. Unfortunately, he died before he could show them what his administration would have looked like.

Messages of sympathy have since started circulating from community members, political figures and media organisations.

Luswepo Community Radio described his passing as a major loss to his family and the people of Mbala.

What happens to the Mbala mayoral position?

Simutenda’s death creates an immediate vacancy before he could take office.

Electoral authorities and local government officials will now have to follow Zambia’s legal procedures for filling the vacant position.

However, those administrative questions are unlikely to be the family’s priority at this moment.

Their attention will remain on mourning a brother, husband, father, relative and community leader.

Meanwhile, political parties are expected to give the family space before discussions about a replacement election gain momentum.

Funeral arrangements had not yet been announced at the time of publication.

A cruel ending to an election story

The 2026 general election produced intense political competition across Zambia.

While national attention focused on the presidential race between Hakainde Hichilema and Brian Mundubile, local elections carried equal importance for communities.

Mayors are often the leaders residents expect to address roads, sanitation, markets and other daily municipal concerns.

Simutenda’s victory showed that Mbala residents believed he was the person to take on that responsibility.

However, fate offered him only six days as mayor-elect.

His passing is also a reminder that candidates and political leaders remain human beings with families and personal struggles beyond campaign rallies.

Behind every poster is a person carrying hopes, pressures and, sometimes, private battles with illness.

Steward Simutenda ended election day as the future mayor of Mbala. He died before he could take the oath, occupy the office or begin implementing his plans.

His political victory will remain part of Mbala’s history. Sadly, it will also be remembered as a mandate that ended before it could truly begin.
