Arsenal 1-1 Brighton. In an exhilarating match in North London, Brighton managed to secure a 1-1 draw against Arsenal thanks to a second-half goal from Joao Pedro. The Gunners had been on track to maintain their perfect start to the season until Declan Rice’s red card shifted the momentum in favour of the Seagulls.

Arsenal seemed poised to continue their winning streak when Bukayo Saka set up Kai Havertz for a lobbed finish over Brighton goalkeeper Bart Verbruggen in the 38th minute. However, the game took a dramatic turn shortly after halftime. Declan Rice, already booked for a late foul on Joel Veltman, received a second yellow card for delaying a free-kick, leading to his dismissal. Veltman himself might consider himself fortunate to have escaped a booking for his role in the incident.

With Arsenal reduced to ten men, Brighton intensified their attack and equalized in the 58th minute. Yankuba Minteh’s shot was initially parried by Arsenal’s David Raya, but Joao Pedro was on hand to slot the rebound under the keeper.

Arsenal had a chance to regain the lead when Havertz was through on goal, but his shot was saved by Verbruggen. Brighton’s Yasin Ayari also had an opportunity to secure a win, but Raya made another crucial save late in the game. Despite a strong push from Brighton, including the introduction of £39.5m signing Georginio Rutter, they couldn’t find the decisive goal.

Before kickoff, Arsenal’s positive mood was buoyed by the deadline-day acquisition of Raheem Sterling on loan from Chelsea. Havertz’s goal seemed to confirm their optimism. However, the game took a downturn with Rice’s dismissal. The red card, which was Rice’s first in his 245 Premier League appearances, left Arsenal struggling to maintain control.

The absence of Rice, compounded by the injury to new signing Mikel Merino—who is sidelined with a suspected fractured shoulder—could pose a significant challenge for manager Mikel Arteta. The team, although stronger than last season, will be without two key midfielders and will need to address their finishing issues following Havertz’s missed opportunity.

Brighton, fresh from winning their first two matches of the season, showed resilience after going behind. Despite losing experienced midfielder James Milner to injury early on, they continued to press forward with young Swedish player Ayari stepping up.

Arsenal, led by Saka, initially looked dominant, but Brighton’s persistence and tactical adjustments paid off. Kaoru Mitoma’s first-half volley went wide, but Pedro’s goal shifted the momentum firmly in Brighton’s favor. With significant investment this transfer window, Brighton is aiming to become a regular fixture in European competitions. Manager Fabian Hurzeler will be pleased with his team’s performance but will rue the missed opportunity to claim all three points against a potential title contender.
