The war in Ukraine was a topic of conversation between visiting Russian Foreign Minister Sergei Lavrov and Eritrean President Isaias Afwerki on Thursday.

The president of Eritrea stated in regards to the conflict in Ukraine that “the fantasy to build a global uni-polar order has absolutely failed.”

He urged “an integrated effort to fight and combat the colonial and hegemonic history that had threatened the world.”

Yemane Gebremeskel, the minister of information for Eritrea, stated that the discussions focused on improving relations between the two nations and “the dynamics of the war in Ukraine.”

According to Mr. Yemane’s tweet, “the conversations focused on the dynamics of the war in Ukraine and strengthening bilateral ties in the sectors of energy, mining, information technology, education, and health.”

The only African nation to vote against a UN resolution denouncing Russia’s invasion of Ukraine in March 2022 was Eritrea.

On the final part of his second trip to Africa in six months, Mr. Lavrov visited Eritrea in addition to Angola, South Africa, and Eswatini.
