Sakala, Former Army Secretary, Arrested Over Presidential Jet

EVARISTO SAKALA, a former Army Secretary at the Ministry of Defence, was detained for engaging in fraudulent business dealings totaling 400 million US dollars in connection with the purchase of the Gulfstream G650 Presidential Aircraft.

One count of intentional disregard for the law and procedure is brought against Mr. SAKALA of Chalala in Lusaka.

Timothy Moono, the head of corporate communications for the Anti Corruption Commission, claims that Mr. Sakala, who is the Army Secretary and a member of the Ministerial Procurement Committee, wilfully disregarded the law and procedure when he approved the award of the offer.

According to Mr. Moono, the contract price for the Modernization of the Defense Forces Program is 400 million US dollars, which will go to Elbit Systems Ltd.

In a statement, he said that with Mr. SAKALA’s detention, there have now been SIX people detained in connection with the purchase of the Gulfstream G650 Presidential Aircraft.

Others include retired Brigadier General STARDY MWALE, a former secretary of defense, and MICHAEL MBEWE, a former secretary of defense.

Since then, Mr. SAKALA has been freed on bond, and he is scheduled to show up in court soon.
