The first-ever gathering of African trade unions is being co-hosted in Lusaka by the Multilateral Partnership for Organizing, Workers, and Rights (M POWER) and the Zambia Congress of Trade Unions (ZCTU).
The gathering is one of the Summit for Democracy’s ongoing side events.
The Zambian government is committed to upholding the principles of democracy and workers’ rights, according to Labour and Social Security Minister BRENDA TAMBATAMBA, who also spoke at the conference.
Ms. TAMBATAMBA revealed that the government has begun the process of evaluating all articles of labor law legislation.
There cannot be a democracy without workers, according to Joy Beene, Secretary General of the Zambia Confederation of Trade Unions (ZCTU).
The regional program director for the Africa Solidarity Center, Christopher Johnson, asked the leaders of the African trade unions to use the gathering to consider the current situation of democracy in Africa.
