The Australian government praised Zambia for doing away with the death penalty, calling the move a historic victory.

The country of Australia, according to Foreign Affairs and Trade Minister PENNY WONG, rejects the death sentence in all situations and for all criminals.

He made this statement in a letter of congratulations from the Australian government to the Zambian government, which was given to Dr. ELIAS MUNSHYA, the High Commissioner for Zambia to Australia, today in Canberra.

Mr. WONG added that Australia looks forward to working with Zambia in the future to abolish the death penalty worldwide.

Dr. MUNSHYA further stated that the government is dedicated to advancing democracy, human rights, sound leadership, and fundamental freedoms.

He claimed that on December 23, 2022, President Hichilema signed legislation to end the death penalty.

The removal of criminal defamation of the president from the Penal Code in Zambia, according to Dr. MUNSHYA, is another indication of President Hichilema’s dedication to upholding human rights and the law.

This is in accordance with a statement made to ZNBC news by CHARLES MUCHOLO, Zambia’s First Secretary for the Press in Australia.
