Alleged thief killed by two security guards, who were later detained

Two Kafue security officers have been seized on suspicion of killing a guy who had allegedly gone to a construction site to steal.

According to police assistant public relations officer Godfrey Chilabi, on January 20, 2023, at around 5:00 a.m., police received a report of theft from Steven Halinga, age 41, of Kaseba Compound in Kafue District. Halinga said two security guards from his construction site, which is close to the Shikoswe Railway Crossing, told him they had apprehended a suspect who had tried to steal some steel bars from the site.

Investigations, according to him, show that security guards from the Hafe construction business, Kunda Kojuck, 28, and Kennedy Putu, 21, both of the Shikoswe compound, reported for duty at the aforementioned building site on January 19, 2023, at 18:00 hours.

“Around 03:00hrs, they saw two male persons who were stealing steel bars. They managed to apprehend one identified as Given Gondwe aged 35 of unmarked House number in Zambia Compound while the other one ran away.In the process of apprehending, the suspect reacted and hit both guards with an iron bar. They sustained some cuts on their hands,” he said.

According to Mr. Chilabi, the security personnel assaulted the guy with iron rods after being outnumbered and suffering head injuries.

He claimed that after being carried to the police, the suspect was unable to be detained because he appeared to be gravely hurt and was bleeding from the ears, lips, and head.

The suspect died after being taken to Kafue District Hospital, according to Mr. Chilabi.

He declared that an investigation file had been started and was being looked into.

“Meanwhile, the two security guards are detained in custody to help with investigations. The body of the deceased is in Kafue District Hospital Mortuary awaiting postmortem,” he said.
