Bambuya, 81, is in court for marijuana possession

An 81-year-old man from Kavuma Village in Waterfalls, Lusaka, has been charged with trafficking roughly 40 grams of marijuana and has appeared before a court.

But because Tie Mwape entered a guilty plea before the chief resident magistrate in Lusaka when the issue originally came up.

Mwape is accused of trafficking psychoactive chemicals, a crime punishable by up to 25 years in prison.

It is alleged that on November 26 of this year, Mwape illegally transported 36 grams of marijuana, a herbal product of the cannabis sativa plant.

A State prosecutor informed the court that the matter was scheduled for reading of the facts yesterday, but that it could not be done because the magistrate trying the case was not present.

The accused then raised his hand to speak, and the prosecutor requested for a break.

The magistrate assured Mwape that the court hearing his case on December 12, 2022, will address his concerns. Mwape stated, “In remand, I may be killed.”

Police allegedly discovered the drugs at Mwape’s home while looking into a case in which he was thought to be in possession of stolen property.
