Radio and TV personality Dineo Ranaka has been receiving a lot of love and support from her fans after opening up about her mental struggles and suicidal thoughts in May. On Sunday, 2 July, the Kaya 959 breakfast show host opened up once again about her condition after disclosing last week that she has been diagnosed with severe chronic depression.
In a number of Instagram posts, Dineo shared with her fans that she has been living with Temporal Lobe Epilepsy since her mid-twenties. I’ve been living with it since my mid twenties. My episodes have gotten worse with age. It frightens me honestly.
“Imagine having seizures in your sleep. So I experience seizures in my sleep. My fear is what if I never wake up. Just so you understood It’s not my body that goes into seizure. My BRAIN has a seizure. It’s SCARY,” Dineo wrote.
According to Health Line, Temporal Lobe Epilepsy is one of 20 different kinds of epilepsy and is the most common. Epilepsy is a brain disorder that causes changes in brain cell activity that result in seizures, periods of unusual behavior or feelings, and in some cases a loss of consciousness.
People with this condition experience feelings of déjà-vu (familiarity) or some stomach upset – The Epilepsy Foundation says. These may be coupled with feelings of fear, panic, anxiety, a rising sensation coming from the stomach to the chest or throat, or butterflies with nausea are other common auras. Some people may sense an unusual smell.
The reality TV star shared that she believes that her depression is triggered by her Temporal Lobe Epilepsy. She further said that depression is not just mental or emotional, but neurological.
“It has really affected my life weirdly of late. But I’ll keep doing research and keep learning. I really want God to help me help people to understand depression, including medical experts that still associate it to JUST traumatic life experiences and feelings of sadness,” Dineo added.
