Government instructs FRA to provide millers with more maize

The Food Reserve Agency (FRA) has been ordered by the government to distribute 200,000 metric tons of maize to millers across the nation.

The action, according to Commerce Minister CHIPOKA MULENGA, is intended to reduce the rising cost of mealie meal.

At a news conference in Lusaka, Mr. MULENGA stated that the government had contacted almost all millers and that they would all be purchasing corn from the FRA for K4 per kilogram, or K200 for a 50-kilogram bag.

He said that the action will give millers access to maize at low costs, resulting in lower mealie meal prices.

The Minister did, however, issue a warning to dealers who have a tendency to purchase mealie meal at lower costs then mark it up when reselling it.
