Maid on the run after hiding child’s birth

Accused of hiding the birth of her child from her partner, a 24-year-old Kitwe maid is on the run.

Martin Mwamba, a 32-year-old Community Crime Prevention Officer (CCPU), discovered what appeared to be a partially-decomposed baby boy wrapped in a plastic bag at the home of Leya Kasonde’s twin sisters. He then reported Kasonde to the police.

Although it is believed that Mr. Mwamba made preparations for the baby’s birth, he was not informed of it.

According to Copperbelt Province Commanding Officer Peacewell Mweemba, police were notified of an allegation of a child’s birth being concealed on Saturday, January 28 of this year.

He claimed that Mr. Mwamba had made the claim that his girlfriend Leya, who was expecting, had hid the birth of his child.

“Brief facts are that on a date unknown in the month of April, 2022, Mr Mwamba received information from the suspect that she was pregnant and he saw the pregnancy grow up to last month and they even started preparations for the baby. On Saturday, January 28, 2023 at around 15:00 hours, he was called to the house of his girlfriend’s twin sister in Mulenga Compound and informed that Leya had developed labour pains, and he organised transport to take her to Mulenga Clinic where she was later referred to Kitwe Teaching Hospital and admitted to Chambishi Female Surgical Ward,” he said.

The reporter was once again invited to the suspect’s twin sister’s home, where they sat down for a meeting after the suspect was released from the hospital at around 10:00 a.m., according to Mr. Mweemba.
