Pope Travels To South Sudan

As part of what the Roman Catholic Church refers to as a pilgrimage for peace in Africa, Pope Francis will continue his journey from the Democratic Republic of the Congo to South Sudan on Friday.

Francis will be accompanied in the capital, Juba, by the Archbishop of Canterbury and the Moderator of the General Assembly of the Church of Scotland. It will be the first papal visit since South Sudan declared independence in 2011.

By traveling there, the pope is keeping a promise he made to South Sudan’s competing leaders, Vice-President Riek Machar and President Salva Kiir, in 2019.

Pope Francis urged youth to avoid corruption as he wrapped off his trip to the Democratic Republic of the Congo.
