On the Copperbelt, in Chingola, two girls and their boyfriends were apprehended after conspiring to steal two cars from the girl’s uncle.

They are also accused of stealing a pistol from their grandfather before the theft, which they then used to simulate the robbery.

The two sisters and one of their boyfriends have all been apprehended by Copperbelt Commanding Officer Peacewell Mweemba police, while the other remains on the run.

According to him, the girl’s uncle Job Ngandwe junior’s Toyota Noah and Ford Escape were allegedly taken between July and November of this year.

“A 19-year-old juvenile of Chingola was apprehended after he was found in possession of a Crvena Zastava pistol serial number 252022, Calibre 7.65mm model 70. Upon being interviewed, the suspect said that he got the firearm from his girlfriend, also a juvenile aged 18. When interviewed, the girlfriend told officers that she stole the pistol from her sick grandfather Job Ngandwe senior, the father of Job Ngandwe junior, who is the victim of the two aggravated robberies,” he said.

He claimed that the young girl admitted to investigators that she had given the gun to her lover, who then attacked her uncle and stole the Toyota Noah and Ford Escape from their home, which were later found abandoned in Soweto Township, while working with Elias Chileshe of Kabundi East in Chingola.

According to Mr. Mweemba, the 19-year-old boy, his girlfriend, her elder sister, who is 20 years old, and her boyfriend, who is pals with her younger sister’s boyfriend, planned the robbery of the Ford Escape.

“Facts that led to the apprehension of the three was that on December 7, 2022, while the anti-robbery officers were on night patrol, at about 00:30 hours they received information from the grandfather to one of the suspects who informed the Police that his grandson was telling his friends that he had a lot of money and that he wanted to organise people to go and attack him and rob him,” he said.

He claimed that when the information reached the accused’s grandfather, he suspected the grandson of having a gun because he had received a tip that he did, and it was through this tip that the Police were alerted, leading them to identify the suspect who later confessed to having committed the robberies.

“The two sisters and one suspect have been apprehended and detained in police custody while the other suspect who knows where the Toyota Noah is kept is still at large,” he said.

The leader of the opposition in Parliament, Robert Chabinga, has commended President Hakainde Hichilema for demonstrating a spirit of unity and magnanimity towards his predecessor, former President Edgar Lungu. In the midst of heightened provocations, Mr. Chabinga emphasized that President Hichilema and the United Party for National Development (UPND) are not responsible for the challenges within the former ruling Patriotic Front (PF).

Speaking from his position as the Member of Parliament for Mafinga, Mr. Chabinga advised PF Members of Parliament to acknowledge the changed leadership in the National Assembly. He urged them to embrace discipline and decorum in the legislative body, emphasizing the importance of non-political conduct and effective representation aligned with the wishes of the electorate.

“President Hichilema has demonstrated love towards his predecessor, former President Lungu, even in the face of heightened provocation. The challenges within the PF should not be laid at the doorstep of President Hichilema and the UPND. It is essential for PF MPs to accept the new reality and move forward,” stated Mr. Chabinga in a statement issued to ZNBC News in Lusaka.

He underscored the importance of maintaining discipline in the National Assembly, urging MPs to prioritize the interests of the people who elected them. Mr. Chabinga emphasized the need for constructive checks and balances from opposition MPs, fostering an environment of cooperation and effective governance.
