U17 Copper Queens lose to South Africa in Region 5 game

The under-17 girls’ team from Zambia was unable to retain the COSAFA title after falling to fierce rivals South Africa 4-3 in the region’s championship game in Lilongwe, Malawi.

South Africa battled hard to win, twice coming from behind to score the game-winning goal in the 84th minute.

After Zambia lost focus shortly after the game began, South Africa took the lead in the opening minute.

In the fourteenth minute, Lucy KAJIYA restored parity.

Ten minutes later, JESSY ZULU gave Zambia the lead before South Africa tied the score.

Four minutes into the second half, substitute ZANGOSE ZULU gave Zambia the lead, but South Africa tied the score once more four minutes later to make it 3- 3.

When ANDRIELLE MIBE scored the winning goal with six minutes remaining in what appeared to be an offside, Zambian hearts were devastated.

Zambian coach NAOMI PHIRI said that her squad had a victory taken from them.

After losing out the previous year, South African coach VICTORIA MBATHA is pleased with the triumph.
