A 50-year-old man named Jibodu Babatunde Olukayode is being detained by police in Lusaka for the animal cruelty offense.
This came about as a result of police receiving information from a member of the public that a male foreigner was killing dogs in the Meanwood Ibex region and allowing them to fester and turn into maggots that he could utilize for an unspecified reason.
Police deputy spokesperson Danny Mwale said in a statement that during a search of the home on January 17, 2023 between 14:00 and 20:00, a team of officers from the Zambia Police, Drug Enforcement Commission, Department of Immigration, Provincial Veterinary Department, and Public Health Department of the Lusaka City Council discovered three cages in one of the rooms, one of which contained four pieces of dog carcass in a rotten state with several other animal parts.
He claimed that the team also found boxes inside the home’s ceiling board that contained vacuums, televisions, and other various household items.
The premises which is installed with several surveillance cameras had 14 live dogs within the yard.
The suspect who lives alone at the said house, is believed to be a British National of Nigerian origin,” he said.
According to Mr. Mwale, the suspect is currently being held in police custody on charges of animal cruelty and other offenses relating to public health.
