Vice President Mutale-Nalumango has urged the University of Zambia (UNZA) management to maintain continuous engagement with student leaders to prevent unrest and ensure a peaceful academic environment.

Speaking at the inaugural Leadership and Conflict Resolution Training for Student Leaders at UNZA, Dr. Mutale-Nalumango emphasized the importance of communication between students and university authorities. She reiterated the government’s commitment to engaging with students across the country and called for a leadership style centered on listening, collaboration, and constructive engagement.

“Our leadership approach remains to listen, engage, and collaborate. We encourage all students to follow suit,” Dr. Mutale-Nalumango stated.

She further highlighted that leadership is a privilege that comes with great responsibility. She urged student leaders to use their positions to drive positive change and promote dialogue over confrontation when addressing issues.

Government Backs Leadership Training for Students

The government has introduced leadership and conflict resolution training to equip student leaders with skills that will enhance communication, negotiation, and problem-solving abilities.

Minister of Education Douglas Syakalima, who was also present at the event, underscored the importance of resolving conflicts through non-violent means and proactive engagement.

“The training program is designed to equip students with essential skills in dialogue, consensus-building, and strategic negotiation. These skills are vital in fostering a culture of peace within our universities,” Syakalima stated.

He emphasized that such programs would help reduce student unrest by providing structured channels for addressing grievances, ensuring that conflicts are resolved through peaceful and constructive dialogue.

UNZA Management Commends Student Leadership

Speaking at the event, UNZA Deputy Vice-Chancellor Boniface Namangala acknowledged the positive shift in student leadership over the years. He cited improved relations between the student union and university management, attributing this to a more professional approach taken by student representatives.

“We have seen a great improvement in how student leaders engage with university authorities. This has created a more peaceful environment and enabled us to address student concerns effectively,” Namangala said.

He further noted that such engagements between students and management are crucial in creating an atmosphere where academic progress is prioritized over conflict.

Student Leaders Welcome Government Initiative

The University of Zambia Student Union (UNZASU) President, Dixon Mutambo, praised the government’s proactive approach in fostering leadership skills among students. He encouraged continued collaboration between students and authorities to ensure that student concerns are addressed in a timely manner.

“We appreciate the government’s efforts in strengthening student leadership. However, we urge authorities to continue engaging with us and addressing our concerns to sustain harmony on campus,” Mutambo said.

He emphasized that students are not opposed to dialogue but need assurance that their voices are heard and their grievances are taken seriously by university management.

The Role of Leadership and Conflict Resolution in Universities

The introduction of leadership and conflict resolution training is a significant step toward nurturing responsible and solution-driven leadership among students.

Over the years, student protests and unrest have been a challenge in many universities, often leading to disruptions in learning and property damage. By empowering student leaders with conflict resolution skills, the government aims to promote peaceful engagements and reduce instances of violent confrontations on campuses.

Additionally, this initiative aligns with the government’s broader strategy of fostering a conducive learning environment across Zambia’s higher education institutions.

A Commitment to Lasting Peace and Academic Excellence

The Zambian government, university management, and student leaders all recognize the importance of collaborative leadership in ensuring a stable and progressive academic environment.

By prioritizing continuous engagement, training, and constructive dialogue, institutions like UNZA can create sustainable solutions to student concerns, ultimately fostering an environment where both academic and personal growth can thrive.

This initiative marks a significant milestone in strengthening leadership structures within universities, ensuring that future student leaders are equipped with the skills necessary to promote peace, advocate for their peers, and drive positive change within their institutions.
