One Rudra Copper Mine employee in Chingola died there and then, while another is seeking medical attention after the two were caught in a landslide while working in an open pit about 2.5 meters below ground level.
While Mulenga Nsama, 24, was only partially buried, Christian Silavwe, 27, of the New Kasompe neighborhood, was found entirely buried and dead.
The two victims were given the task of working at the open surge pit, which was roughly 2.5 meters below ground level, on Wednesday at 11:55 a.m.
Mr. Silavwe was killed in a landslide that crashed on them while they were working, according to Copperbelt Province Commanding Officer Peacewell Mweemba.]
“We received a report from Reddy Naresh Reddy,production manager who informed the police that two employees of Rudra Copper mine got trapped by a landslide where they were working from and in the process Mr Silavwe died while Mr Nsama sustained injuries. The two were retrieved and rushed to the hospital where Mr Silavwe was certified his body was lying in the Nchanga South hospital mortuary awaiting post mortem,”he said.
He said Mr Nsama was receiving treatment at the hospital after sustaining a fractured right leg.
