Truck with 15 adult dogs intended for smuggling into DRC seized

15 dogs were being brought from Lusaka in a vehicle that was being seized by police on the Copperbelt with plans to sneak them into the Democratic Republic of Congo (DRC).

Although authorities have confiscated the truck to conduct additional investigations, it is suspected that Edward Ntini of Lusaka is the owner of the adult canines of various species.

This incident occurs roughly four months after a similar one in which 70 puppies were being trafficked from Mkushi and headed for the DRC; 40 of the pups perished on the truck from asphyxia.

According to Copperbelt commanding officer Peacewell Mweemba, the incident happened at the Konkola checkpoint in Chililabombwe yesterday at 13:20.

“Police impounded one Light truck Fuso registration number BAZ 2776, Laden with 15 adult dogs of different species, intended to be smuggled into DRC via Kasumbalesa border. The driver for  the said motor vehicle is Tembo Moses 30, of Matero Township in Lusaka.

The district veterinary office was notified for advise and it was discovered that the stock movement permit accompanying the dogs was actually signed by an office orderly in the vet office in Lusaka,” he said.

According to Mr. Mweemba, the local veterinary office has so far detained the truck and brought it in along with the dogs for additional examinations.
