The Economic and Financial Crimes Court has been informed by a witness that former deputy inspector general of police CHARITY KATANGA owes Higer Bus ZAMBIA $150,000 for a deal involving her ten impounded buses.
Higher Bus ZAMBIA General Manager WU MING testified that Ms. KATANGA has reportedly failed to settle the 150,000 dollar debt because law enforcement authorities had seized her bank accounts.
Mr. WU further informed the Economic and Financial Crimes Court that Mrs. KATANGA paid Higer in installments for the 10 buses between 2017 and 2021.
Mrs. KATANGA earned 1.8 million KWACHA from the police service between January 2017 and November 2021, when her contract was ended, according to Senior Accountant for the ZAMBIA Police Service CLEMENT TEMBO, who testified before the Financial Crimes Court.
Additionally, Mr. TEMBO presented Mrs. KATANGA’s pay stubs in court during the time period under consideration.
He was presenting his case to Economic and Financial Crimes Court judge LUSAKA Chief Resident Magistrate DAVIES CHIBWILI.
This relates to a case in which Mrs. KATANGA is accused of possessing items that were more than $2 million in value and were thought to be proceeds of crime.
It is alleged that between January 1, 2017, and June 6, 2022, Mrs. KATANGA, acting jointly and in concert with other unidentified individuals, purchased 10 Higer buses, each worth $200,000, with money that was thought to be the proceeds of crime.
The Forfeiture of Proceed of Crime Act Number 19 of 2010’s Section 71 prohibits the offense.
In August of last year, Mrs. KATANGA was detained.
