Bekele returns to Ethiopia Premier League

Ethiopian national team captain Shimeles Bekele has returned to the Ethiopian Premier League after a 10-year absence. He signed a two-year contract for Mekelakeya. Bekele started playing football at senior level in Ethiopia at his hometown club,

Hawassa City FC before moving on to St George. His time at St George was very successful as he won league titles with the team and them to the last eight of the Confederation Cup.

He later moved on to Libyan League team Al Ittihad of Tripoli before joining Sudanese club Al-Merrikh. Bekele was at Al Merrikh for a short spell before signing for Egyptian League team Petrojet.

It was at Petrojet that he really blossomed, scoring 29 goals in 123 matches. As captain, he was a key player for the team during his five-year spell (2014 – 2019).
