Two adolescent United Church of Zambia (UCZ) members lost their life in the Luapula River during an Easter church function, which was tragic.
A group of five girls, including 17-year-olds Polyne Mwansa and Charity Mwelwa, decided to go swimming in the river close to the Miloke Secondary School harbor. Unfortunately, they were unable to return to shore.
According to Luapula Police Commanding Officer Fwambo Siame, Samfya Police were informed of the drowning by Reverend Daniel Kabalwe.
The victims made the decision to go swimming in the neighboring river while they were attending a church gathering for the Easter break. Sadly, Mwansa and Mwelwa were carried away by the current.’
“Information gathered is that the Victims are members of UCZ who were attending a church gathering for the Easter holiday. Whilst attending the church gathering, five girls decided to go and swim in Luapula River which is near to where the church gathering was being held and as they were swimming, the above named persons were swept away by the river current,” Mr fwambo said
As of now, the bodies of the two teenagers have not been found. However, police are actively searching the scene to locate the missing individuals.
