Miner passes away while working and loading copper ore

A 24-year-old miner was killed in a Mining accident at the South Ore Body (SOB) at Nkana mine plant when the carriage he was loading with crushed copper ore disengaged and collapsed on him while he was at work.

At level 3360 meters, where he was supposed to load crushed copper ore into a train wagon carrier, John Mwela, a worker at Beem General Suppliers, met his demise.

The tragic mine accident occurred yesterday around 11:20, according to Copperbelt Provincial Commanding Officer Peacewell Mweemba.

He claimed that Mr. Mwela passed away after suffering from bruising, edema, and a depressed left ribcage.

“Mwela reported on duty at 08:00 hours and was assigned to work from ground level 3360 meters when a carriage he was loading with crushed copper ore disengaged and fell on him before squeezing him against the wall. Mwela sustained a depressed left side of the rib cage, bruises and swelling on the right pelvic region.

The body was retrieved by mine authorities and rushed to Kitwe Teaching Hospital mortuary,” he said.

According to Mr. Mweemba, Harold Maluku, a businessman and one of the directors at BEEM General Suppliers, reported the incident to the police.
