More Lusaka drug addicts are detained by police

Police have detained 45 suspected drug addicts who are thought to have been intimidating locals in some areas of Lusaka.

Police carried out an operation over the weekend, rounding up suspects between the ages of 17 and 50.

The individuals detained are thought to be responsible for a spate of recent attacks and rape cases in the city.

This followed several reports of attacks on members of the public by the ‘junkies’ with others being raped as early as 18:00 hours,” Police Deputy Public Relations Officer Danny Mwale said.

The operation took place in the Matero neighborhoods of Katambalala, Chibolya, Petroda, Zingalume, Lilanda, Chipolilo, Kumalasha Muchinga grounds, Chunga, and Shadreck.

“All the suspects aged between 17 and 50 are in police custody awaiting court appearance,” Mwale said.

Meanwhile, 19 people among them four women have been arrested for Idle and Disorderly.

“This follows several reports of attacks on members of the public and Police swung into action in Mongu Central Business District and arrested 19 suspects aged between 18 and 40. One was found with cannabis and officers from the Drug Enforcement Commission have since been engaged.

The operation was conducted on January 15, 2023 between 20:00 hours and 01:00 hours in Mongu.
