A tree they were hiding under fell on a twenty-year-old lady and her daughter in Chirundu District, injuring the daughter but killing the mother.
Around 15:00 yesterday at Makani Village in Chirundu District, Grace Cheelo, a woman, and her one-year-old child were in their corn field when the tragedy happened.
Initial investigations, according to police deputy spokesperson Danny Mwale, showed that the mother was hiding from a heavy wind and thunderstorm when the tree she was hiding under collapsed on her while she was carrying her infant on her back.
According to Mr. Mwale, the man had fatal injuries and was already dead when he arrived at Mtendere Mission Hospital.
“The body of the deceased is in the same Hospital mortuary while the baby is receiving medical attention,” he said.
Another instance included two youngsters, ages six and seven, from the Kuku compound in Lusaka who both perished in the Blue Water Dam while reportedly swimming with their pals.
“Both bodies were retrieved by members of the public who later informed Police in Kuku compound. The deceased were identified as Alex Kapeta and Emma Zimba respectively.
The incident occurred on February 19, 2023 around 15:00 hours at Blue water Dam in Kuku compound,” he said.
According to Mr. Mwale, bodies were placed in the mortuary of the University Teaching Hospitals while they awaited postmortem and burial.
While Mubita Mushokabanji, 16, was swimming with his two pals in Naboye Stream, they all perished in the water.
“The incident occurred on February 19, 2023 around 15:00 hours at Naboye Stream in Kafue District.
Police investigations revealed that the deceased was playing with his two other friends at Naboye Stream where they decided to Swim but the deceased failed and drowned,” Mr Mwale said.
