In Solwezi, nine persons, including a 16-year-old juvenile, have been detained on suspicion of stealing and possessing ZESCO cables.
The offenders were captured by a squad of Zambian police officers and ZESCO security guards following a special operation on Solwezi-area factories of known scrap metal merchants.
Between January 23 and February 1, 2023, the nine suspects were detained.
Three vandals, two operations managers, and four chief executive officers of scrap metal merchants are among the accused.
The accused are being held in the Central Police Stations in Kazomba, Kyawama, and Solwezi and will shortly appear in court.
According to a statement sent to ZNBC no News, ZESCO will keep collaborating with the public to prevent theft and damage of important energy infrastructure, which costs the utility company millions of kwacha every year.
