Rape victim in UNZA reveals that suspect is a Facebook contact of hers

An accused victim who is a 19-year-old University of Zambia (UNZA) student has disclosed that the suspect is someone she has been corresponding with on Facebook.

However, the woman has claimed that prior to Friday, April 7, when the alleged rape allegedly took place, she had never met the “suspect” in person.

Inquiries into the situation are ongoing.

According to police deputy spokesperson Danny Mwale, the incident happened yesterday at around 2:00 a.m. while the girl and her friend were returning to a boarding house in the Mashland area after leaving lessons at UNZA.

According to him, the young person reported that on the way back to their boarding house, she and her buddy saw strangers in the UNZA parking lot who offered to drive them there.

“When they entered the motor vehicle, a Toyota spacio, they noticed that they were three men inside the motor vehicle which immediately sped off until they reached S.O.S in Chazanga area along the Great North Road where her friend managed to jump out of the motor vehicle and immediately alerted the Police,” he said.

However, the victim has revealed that the suspect is someone she has been chatting with on Facebook.

“The 19-year-old victim has revealed to Police during interrogations that she has been communicating with the ‘suspect’ on Facebook, but they never met until the day she was picked on April 7, 2023 around 22:00 hours,” he said.
