Socialist Party president Fred Mmembe Released on Bond

FRED M’MEMBE, the leader of the Socialist Party, has been detained and is facing two counts of assault causing actual bodily harm as well as threats of violence.

According to Police Spokesman DANNY MWALE, Dr. MMEMBE was taken into custody at Serenje.

According to Mr. MWALE, the Socialist Party leader is accused with SAILI CHITA, 62, of the Mulilima neighborhood in Serenje, and DANIEL MUMBA, 41, of Chamboli, Kitwe.

In a statement, he said that the suspects had been freed on bond.

Along with two other purported Socialist Party members, Dr. MMEMBE is accused of assaulting nine alleged United Party for National Development members and firing a gun illegally.

The two political parties clashed while conducting their campaigns at four intersections in the Mwalilima and Kamalamba area of Serenje District yesterday between 14 and 16:30 hours, resulting in two further alleged Socialist Party members being hurt.

The alleged UPND members who fled the scene after attacking the other two victims are the subject of a manhunt.
