The UN’s top official in the Middle East has condemned today’s deadly airstrike by Israel, on a densely populated area in an Israeli-designated humanitarian zone in Khan Younis- Gaza where displaced people were sheltering.

The Israeli Defence Force said earlier that it had struck Hamas militants who were operating in a command-and-control centre embedded inside the humanitarian zone but UN Special Coordinator for Middle East Peace, Tor Wennesland underlined that international humanitarian law, including the principles of distinction and proportionality, must be upheld at all times.

Wennesland’s condemnation is just the latest directed against Israel’s military actions in Gaza after the strike on the al-Mawasi humanitarian zone killed at least 19 people and injured more than 60.

Reports suggest rescue workers were still trying to reach people trapped under rubble and debris. According to Israel at least three Hamas fighters were killed in the operation, a position rejected by militant group which labeled it a blatant lie.

Wennesland said the latest attack merely underscored that nowhere was safe in Gaza and reiterated the UN’s call for all sides to immediately reach an agreement that would bring about the release of all Israeli hostages and a ceasefire in Gaza, adding that the killing of civilians must stop and this horrific war must end.
