Zesco has declared that load shedding, which had previously been scheduled for six hours, will now last for twelve hours due to the decreased water levels at the Kariba reservoir.

The energy company will change the hours of load shedding from to 12 hours per day starting today, Wednesday, January 4, 2023, according to a press release from Zesco Corporate Affairs.

“The Corporation’s ability to meet power demand remains constrained by the drastic reduction in available water in the Kariba reserviour for electricity generation at Kariba North Bank Power Station. At present, the power station’s generating capacity has been reduced from its installed 1080MegaWatts (MW) to below 400MW,” reads the statement in parts.

The company further claims that the relocation of a 150 MW generator from Maamba Collieries Limited Power Plant from 4 January till 20 January 2023 for scheduled annual maintenance has made things worse.

The statement reads, “ZESCO profoundly regrets the inconvenience that may be caused.”
