In the last three quarters of this year, there have been 745 more road traffic accidents (RTAs) than there were during the same period last year.
This marks a 31% increase from the 24,612 records this year compared to the 23,867 records previous year.
During the commemoration of the World Day of Remembrance for Road Traffic Victims in Lusaka, ALLEN MATE, the Board Chairperson of the Road Transport and Safety Agency, or RTSA, verified the development.
According to Mr. MATE, the number of accidental deaths increased by 158 between January and September of this year.
According to him, the country has registered 1,680 deaths from January through September this year, up from 1,522 during the same period previous year, a 10.4% increase.
According to Mr. MATE, excessive speeding was a factor in 16% of the accidents, with Lusaka leading the way.
And FRANK TAYALI, minister of transportation and logistics, urged stakeholders to work together to prevent RTAs.
According to Mr. Tayali, Zambia records more than 30,000 RTAs per year, resulting in more than 2,000 fatalities and more than 14,000 injuries.
The Minister urged RTSA and all stakeholders to take immediate action to buck the trend.
This was stated by Mr. TAYALI in a speech that Acting Permanent Secretary STEVEN MBEWE of the Ministry of Transport and Logistics read on his behalf.
