TIZ, Transparency International Zambia, has urged Auditor General DICK SICHEMBE to take into consideration leaving his position for ethical reasons.

This, according to TIZ Executive Director MAURICE NYAMBE, is done to enable exhaustive and reliable investigations.

The group has also applauded the Anti-Corruption Commission’s -ACC- arrest of Dr. SICHEMBE for allegedly engaging in corrupt practices.

According to him, the arrest of a top government official supports the idea that there are no sacred cows in the fight against corruption.

In an interview with ZNBC news, Mr. NYAMBE expressed his confidence that once Dr. SICHEMBE’s trial gets underway, he will have the chance to defend himself against the accusations leveled against him.

The executive director of TIZ is also optimistic that the Anti-Corruption Commission has conducted a thorough investigation of the situation.

In the meantime, Mr. NYAMBE claimed that his group was aware of requests from several social groups requesting that President HAKAINDE HICHILEMA dismiss Dr. SICHEMBE.

However he added that the removal of an Auditor General from office is clearly outlined in the constitution.

Dr. SICHEMBE was detained by the ACC on Thursday for corrupt activities involving more than one million kwacha.

He faces one offense of obtaining goods via false pretenses, one count of conspiring to cheat the government, and one count of deliberate disregard for the Anti-Corruption Act’s applicable processes.
