10 people attempting to smuggle mealie meal in fish baskets arrested

A PLAN to hide mealie-meal in fish baskets with the intention of smuggling the product outside the nation has resulted in the detention of 10 Luanshya, including four women.

Mealie meal smuggling into the Democratic Republic of the Congo (DRC) initially appeared like a good idea, but the smugglers’ decision to leave the product in the major market in Luanshya backfired.

This incident was reported on Tuesday, according to Copperbelt police commanding officer Peacewell Mweemba.

“Yesterday, April 26th, the truck ACH 8060 was offloaded and the buskers were properly checked and the following number of bags were found. 55 by 25 kilograms bags of Antelope mealie meal breakfast, eight by 25 Kg bags of SBS mealie meal breakfast and 66 by 10 kg bags of Antelope mealie meal were recovered making a total of 129 mealie-meal recovered,” he said.

Mulenga Fabian, aged 39, Frank Chama, 22, Osman Banda, 42, Ruth Pomboloka, 52, Angela Mulambo, 41, and Esnart Mwape, 39 are among those who have been apprehended.

Maureen Chisanga, 48, Bridget Chalo, 38, Alice Tembo, 45, and Mwila Jackson, 40, are among the others who have been detained and jointly accused of assembling for the purpose of smuggling.

They anticipate appearing in court soon.
