On the Copperbelt, in the Lufwanyama district, a 47-year-old farmer from the Mukumbo area died after being battered by another farmer who had suspected him of having an affair with his wife.
Derrick Mashilipa and Carlos Chitangala are thought to have gotten into a fight after Derrick Mashilipa accused Carlos of having an affair with his wife. The suspect is accused of using kicks, slaps, and fists during the fight.
The culprit fled after the victim, Mr. Mashilipa, who is now dead, fell to the ground during the altercation.
The victim passed away yesterday in the intensive care unit where he had been hospitalized since last week, according to Copperbelt police commanding officer Peacewell Mweemba.
“Brief facts are that the deceased was drinking beer on February 8th this year with Mr Chitangala, the suspect around 10:00 hours in Mukumbo area. The suspect then accused the deceased of having an affair with his wife. The two had an argument which resulted in a fight and the suspect beat up the deceased using fists, kicks and slaps. The deceased fell to the ground and the suspect left him there. The owner of the drinking place, an old lady who is yet to be identified upon realising that the victim was not getting up went and informed his wife,but she didn’t take it serious and only sent her son around 16:00 hours who found the condition of the father was not good,” he said.
He claimed that the victim’s son then called Langson Mashilipa, a young man who had traveled from Mpongwe and arrived in the Mukumbo region.
“When he saw the condition of his brother who wasn’t even talking at the time, he rushed him to Grizzly Mine Hospital where they were referred to Kalulushi General Hospital and Later Kitwe Teaching Hospital where he was admitted to the intensive care unit until yesterday, February 22nd when he passed away.The reatives did not report the matter to the police until the deceased passed away. Police in Lufwanyama quickly informed the Mukumbo Community Crime Prevention Unit who managed to apprehend the suspect,” he said.
